Is My Child Ready For Piano Lessons?

I have been teaching piano for almost 40 years and the most asked question received from parents is ‘How do I know when my child is ready for Piano lessons?”. This seems like such a simple question, but au contraire!! There are many factors to consider….let’s explore! (see the list and links at the bottom of the page for beginning materials)

When considering readiness of age, one must also consider methodology. I teach Suzuki Piano Method as opposed to the traditional lesson approach. This means sound first the same way we learn language with reading being delayed. I would not consider formal one on one lessons until 6 years of age for a traditional piano student as it would be contrary to introduce a 3 year old to sophisticated music notation.

Another way we measure the young child’s readiness for lessons is through passive observation. The parent and child should attend other students lessons weekly, allowing them to absorb what is happening at lessons organically. As time goes by the young prospective student will show the desire to join in…. that’s when you know they are ready! From that point the teacher and parent will frame the continued education in a thoughtful and meaningful manner specific to that child.

Suzuki Piano tends to begin instruction in a small group for the very young child, typically around 3-4 years of age. One parent must attend all lessons and classes with the child, observe and take notes. They are also tasked with playing the recordings in the background at home, initiating and guiding practice as well as provide a clean clutter free space to be inspired to play their instrument.

If you are intending to start piano lessons with a young child, which I highly recommend, you should seek out a trained and certified Suzuki Piano Instructor.

They are never too young and rarely too old to Twinkle
